Fermentation bucket cleaning
How do you go about this ?
Ive only been using water to clean followed by Star San to sanitize but I think Ive been pushing my luck in terms of getting an infection. Can I use chloring dioxide (what strength ?) followed by a water rinse and then Star San ? How long should the bucket sit with the chlorine dioxide ? Primary : Belgian Golden Strong Ale Secondary : Dry Stout, American Barley Wine 1.108 Bottle : APA, Dry Stout, Cider, Belgian Witbier, Cascadian Dark Ale, California Common, Baltic Porter, Weissen. On Tap : Dunkelweizen, Bohemian Pilsener, Kolsch |

RE: Fermentation bucket cleaning
chlorine dioxide is a post-rinse sanitizer, isn't it? So surely you wouldn't have to rinse with water and sanatize again?
masterbrewer suggested cleaning with a hot caustic soda solution as a cleaner and sanatized after. I'm going to be trying it on my next brewday. Primary: Pride of Raubsville - The Vuvuzela herald On Tap: Nothing http://nochillbrews.blogspot.com/ |

RE: Fermentation bucket cleaning
How long would you soak for with caustic ?
Would you rinse with acid afterwards (before sanitizer) to neutralise the alkalinity of the caustic ? (25-02-2010 09:03 AM)CalmYourself Wrote: chlorine dioxide is a post-rinse sanitizer, isn't it? RE: Fermentation bucket cleaning
I'm planning on elbow-greasing the caustic, not soaking. And I'm going to rinse thouroughly with hot water (2 or 3 times). Sanatize as per normal afterwards.
I'll let you know if there's any off flavours, but it takes me about 2 months from brew to drink so feedback will take a while. Primary: Pride of Raubsville - The Vuvuzela herald On Tap: Nothing http://nochillbrews.blogspot.com/ |

RE: Fermentation bucket cleaning
To remove yeasty grime rings from my fermentor or demijohns I have used the powder that you use for dishwashing. Try a soak for a demijohn with a tablespoon of powder with hot water or, for a fermentor, use rubber gloves and a green washing up sponge to scrub.
I recall Mike Heydenrych using Vanish powder similarly. Jeremy. To Brew or Mountain Bike, that's my problem

RE: Fermentation bucket cleaning
I tried autodishwashing powder - it worked perfectly. And its no rinse and unscented - thanks.
Interesting about Vanish. (01-03-2010 08:16 PM)Jeremy Wallis Wrote: To remove yeasty grime rings from my fermentor or demijohns I have used the powder that you use for dishwashing.
