I'm new to the site - great resource I must say! Bottled my first beer on Sunday.
Question: I used 5 gallon buckets to brew a porter ale. I cleaned the bucket, soaked it in a bleach solution for 25 minutes, and rinsed it really well. Unfortunately, there is still a slight hint of wort smell in it. The bottle bucket has slight smell to it as well. Any recommendations for cleaning the equipment and nullifying the smell?
Appreciate any help. Thanks!

I've just finished watch ITV's Men Brewing Badly - World Cup 2010 and I have a question... getting to that just now.

Men Brewing Badly is a 5 episode mini-series about 2 brewers from Yorkshire who travel across Africa with a shipment of their beer. The idea is they want to bring the beer to english fans at the world cup.

Anyway, by the time they get to South Africa they've managed to give all their beer away and have to brew some more. The timeline for this is 5 days before the big party. They stopped off at SAB and managed to convince them to brew some english ale according to one of their recipes. SAB agrees and does the beer which comes in kegs 5 days later to their big english fan party.

So, 5 days grain to pouring seems a little impossible to me. Is it possible? I mean I get that primary fermentation could be finished in say 3-4 days, leaving 1 day for force carbing. I've only done 1 keg so far and even that one took 3 days to carb properly (best I could tell).

Hi there

I am thinking of getting a Checker1 pH meter, but before I get it i would like to know a few things about how to properly use the equipment in the brewing process.

I'm not exactly sure how one would use the pH meter to measure the pH of the mash, do you need to take a sample of the mash and cool it down before testing or could you stick it directly into the mash and use a conversion factor to take the temperature into account? (The specs of the meter says accurate to 50 degrees so i don't see how the later is possible?)

Is it recommended to recalibrate the meter for each brew?

Any other useful information with regards to using the meter will be very appreciated!

I have a 9L Corny keg, and coupled my CO2 cylinder to it and set the pressure to 180kpa.(30psi) I heard the gas bubbling throught the beer, as I laid the keg on its side and rocked it back and forth to try and force carbonate it. ( as seen on the Youtube videos) after about 10 minutes, I tried to pour some beer, and got a "whole lotta head" ( about 1cm of beer and 10cm of foam. I waited until the foam subsided into beer ( about 10 minutes) and tasted the beer which tasted flat. I left the pressure in the keg and left it in the fridge for a week and tried again with exactly the same result. Lotsa head, but flat beer. I have been trying off and on for the last 4 weeks, even pushing the pressure up to 400kpa ( the plastic connectors started taking a bit of strain, so I released some), with the same result. What am I doing wrong? any ideas?

(1) Which of the plastic housing type pumps lasts well when pumping near-boiling water ? (Brand Name & where to buy & price)

(2) A proper pump, presumably stainless, magnetically coupled ? (Ditto)

Thanks,

How do you go about this ?
Ive only been using water to clean followed by Star San to sanitize but I think Ive been pushing my luck in terms of getting an infection.

Can I use chloring dioxide (what strength ?) followed by a water rinse and then Star San ?
How long should the bucket sit with the chlorine dioxide ?
